Smart Cathodic Protection System for Real-Time Quantitative Assessment of Corrosion of Sacrificial Anode Based on Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI)

Corrosion of metal structures is often prevented using cathodic protection systems, that employ sacrificial anodes corrode more preferentially relative to the be protected. In-situ monitoring these during early stages their useful life could offer several insights into deterioration material surrounding infrastructure as well serve warning indicator for preventive maintenance critical infrastructure. In this article, we present an Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI) measurement-based technique quantify extent corrosion a zinc anode without manual intervention. The detection apparatus consists lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer affixed onto circular disc, with waterproofing epoxy protecting element when assembly submerged in liquid electrolyte (salt solution) accelerated by means impressed current. We develop analytical model discerning shift resonance frequency in-plane radial expansion mode disc. presented here accurately captures nonlinearity introduced partial delamination product (zinc oxide) from and shows excellent agreement experimental results. Our work establishes efficacy proposed state health stage thus widely adopted structural applications within internet things.
